Description
Tell me about Haiti is a gem. It takes the reader on a voyage from the indigenous people to modern times. Compiled by Alexandra Barbot, the book tells the story of the island in a passionate, straight forward and objective manner. You can “see” the history of the island come alive through the paintings and portraits done by classically trained artist Barbot. They give dignity to the original inhabitants of the island (Arawak, Carib and Taino Indians) as well as the African and Europeans that become part of a thriving colonial slave based economy. You will feel like an explorer, as you learn about the planters, slaves, Creoles and free people of color , the pirates and buccaneers and leaders of Haiti’s historical past. You will learn about how Napoleon defeat on the island influences his decision to sell the Louisiana Territory to the United States. You will see How Haiti played a pivotal role in the development of the New World. You can learn about great heroes of the island, like the founder of Chicago, Jean Baptiste Pointe Dusable. (Born in what is now Haiti in 1745) General Georges Biassou the first black general in the new world, (before Colin Powel by almost 200 years) the 545 Chaseeurs Volontaires de St. Domingues, who in 1777 fought along side the Americans in the battle of Savannah, during the American Revolution, and the island’s own Betsy Ross : Catherine Flon. There are also previously unpublished accounts written by Toussaint Louverture about the battle for independence. Well researched, wonderfully written, and beautifully illustrated. A must read for educators, travelers, history buffs and school students.
