Early in the fourteenth century the people of I reland, especially those of the northern part, began to watch the struggle of the Scotch nation for independence with a new interest and increasing sympathy. This feeling expressed itself at first in a passive rather than an active manner, for the only direct assistance offered was an asylum to Robert Bruce on the Island of Rathlin in 1306, and a badly managed expedition by a company of Irishmen who had been enlisted by Thomas and Alexander Bruce, which was cut to pieces while trying to effect a landing on the coast of Galloway. The successes of the Scots threw a new light on the English government and showed the weakness of Edward II. as compared with his father, in consequence of which the I rish began to withdraw from his service. This fact becomes very significant in view of the large numbers of Irishmen who had fought in the wars in Scotland and Gascony, a single request calling 1B arbour, The Bruce, Bk.
