Emily Dickinson. ISABELLA EIGGS was born into the missionary inheritance. In 1837 her father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Stephen E. Eiggs, received their commission as foreign missionaries, and, after a journey of more than three thousand miles, arrived at Fort Snelling, in Minnesota, then the frontier outpost of the United States A rmy. Still travelling westward they reached Lacquiparle on the upper Minnesota Eiver, where, in 1835, Dr. Thomas Williamson had begun work among the Dakota I ndians. The story of their life of service is known to many through the book Mary and I, or Forty Years with the Sioux. Some memories of the early days in the mission home are now given by one of the daughters, Anna Eiggs Warner, to furnish a background for the letters which follow in this volume. To father and mother on their arrival at Lacquiparle was assigned the long and narrow upper chamber in Dr.
