The greater part of the material is given in the words of those who were a part of the times in which they lived; but for the benefit of others who would now, or in days to come, have a clearer understanding of local happenings, editorial notes are added. These notes bear upon related events of larger historical import, and it should be stated that it is now being more and more generally recognized that the true history of any land or its leaders cannot properly be presented without entering into the life of the people that make the one and create the other. Too much of the experience of any individual or any group of individuals is apt to weary the reader; similarly, a series of disconnected incidents becomes both tiresome and confusing.
