Much of the matter contained in the following pages was prepared for the press more than six years ago, but owing to the rapid advances made in the field of parasitology, particularly concerning insects, the writer has withheld it until this time, when, after considerable revision and addition, it has seemed expedient to publish the same. The manuscript has been in almost constant use for a period of six years in teaching classes in Parasitology, both in the University of California and in the San Francisco Veterinary College. It has been the aim to include herewith a large part of the writers original work, some of which has until now remained unpublished, as well as the published observations of many other investigators in this field, all of which has gone to build up the foundation of the new science of Medical Entomology. This book is not intended to be a comprehensive treatise, touching all the investigations in the field of Medical Entomology, but rather an attempt to systematize the subject and to assist in securing for it a place among the applied biological sciences However, a discussion is included of all of the more important diseases and irritations of man and of the domesticated animals in which insects and arachnids are concerned, either as carriers or as causative organisms. Owing to the irmense literature on insects as relating to disease, much of which is widely scattered, the student in this field must spend considerable time in searching for the desired information, and what is more important, the information is not readily accessible to the physician, the veterinarian, the health officer and the sanitarian. It is therefore to be hoped that this book will not only prove useful as a text, but also as a handbook for all individuals who are professionally interested in the health and well-being of man and beast, as affected by insects and ara
