The present work is designed to supply a want which has long been felt by those commencing the study of medicine and the collateral sciences. An acquaintance with the dead languages, or at least with Latin, Was formerly, and in some parts of Europe is still, considered absolutely necessary for a graduate in medicine as well as in the other learned professions. Although in the United States a classical education is not made an indispensable condition for conferring a medical degree, yet, so long as the great majority of professional terms are in Latin, some knowledge of this language may be said to be absolutely requisite for the medical student. The fact that multitudes of our young men commence the study of medicine without any previous acquaintance with Latin orG reek, renders it important that the elementary works intended for the use of students should be adapted to meet this exigency. To supply the want above indicated has been one of the chief objects of the present work.
