That I have done so is only owing to the fact that so many people, who have read my private diary, or heard bits taken from it, have remarked that so much that they read there was quite new to them, and just what one does not see in the papers, that I have been persuaded to publish it. If it is egotistical, I beg my readers to remember that it is a diary of my every-day life. That that life, though sad in so many ways, was so far a happy one is due undoubtedly to the great kindness I received from so many strangers in a strange country.
