A fable is a story with a moral; a cautionary tale. Most fables involve animals who magically can talk and behave like people. There is a lesson to be learnt from each of these tales which is important for life. Many fables are part of our language and we use them all the time and people know what we mean such as,
‘Killing the golden goose’; destroying that which gives you good fortune.
Some fables are very short. The most famous are ‘Aesop’s Fables’ going back to Greek or Egypt many years ago. e.g. The Hare and the Tortoise.
Some fables are more recent and are longer e.g. The Little Red Hen.
They give a quality story time and if you give in to ‘just another one’ it will not take too long and will be fun for you both.
The idea is that you enjoy reading together; associating reading with fun, attention, closeness and cuddles is an excellent thing.
These stories are designed for your child to join in when the rhymes are written in block capitals on the longer fables such as,
THE LITTLE RED HEN DOES HER BEST
SHE WORKS VERY HARD UNLIKE THE REST
This is fun and you can laugh as you learn but it also helps with memory and prediction of the story which are essential reading skills. I have been telling these stories for over 30 years to pupils and my own children and they are guaranteed to be popular.
I call the tales ‘best loved’ to make sure they are suitable, as some can be very frightening and they will not be found in this collection. Fables help children learn and are excellent for teaching moral development; indeed each story has a moral for you to discuss at the end.
I use simple language to make them accessible to children so soon they will be able to read them alone. Fables allow for excellent language development and each story has new words for you to look at, such as, Gnaw, Boast, Challenge, Teased, Disguise, and Miser.
