Description
From Wikipedia (08/31/12) "Manusm ti (written also as Manusmriti or Manusmruti) (Sanskrit: ), also known as M nava-Dharma stra (Sanskrit: ), is the most important and earliest metrical work of the Dharma stra textual tradition of Hinduism. Generally known in English as the Laws of Manu, or Dharmic discourse to vedic Rishis, on 'way of living' of various classes of society, it was first translated into English in 1794 by Sir William Jones, an linguist, English Orientalist and judge of the British Supreme Court of Judicature in Calcutta. The text presents itself as a discourse given by the sage Manu, to a congregation of seers, or rishis, who beseech him, after the great floods, in the vedic state of 'Brahmavarta' some 10,000 years ago, to tell them on, how to face such calamities in future by organising themselves and lead an organised life with the "laws of all the social classes" (1.2). Vetern sages Manu and Bhrigu gave them a discourse in some 2685 shaloks, compilation of which is called 'Manusmriti'. Manu became the standard point of reference for all future Dharma stras that followed it."
