In 1981, muralist Sachio Yamashita became the artist-in-residence at the Omaha Children's Museum in Omaha, Nebraska. This was at the same time that I (the author) was working as the floor manager at the museum. We quickly became friends and I enjoyed unlimited exposure to Sachio and his art. Although this friendship lasted only one short year, Sachio became a lifelong influence on many facets of my life.
During our association with the Omaha Children's Museum, I recorded some of Sachio' art along with a handful of candid images as Polaroid SX-70 instant prints. After I left the museum in 1982, I stored these prints in an archival film collection and quickly forgot about them. That is, until 2009.
Sadly, Sachio died in 2009. I waited for the art community to recognize and honor Sachio's art, but, alas no retrospective exhibitions have been produced during the last 3 years.
Now, taking matters into my own hands, I have recorded my recollections from 30 years ago and filled an annotated gallery with rare, one-of-a-kind photographs and memories and included it inside this book, "My Sachio: A Personal Study of Muralist Sachio Yamashita--Omaha, Nebraska 1981 - 1982."
Inside "My Sachio" you will find:
- 20+ photographs of Sachio's art
- all photographs are one-of-a-kind and from my personal collection
- photographs are high-resolution and full-color that can be enlarged by the reader for detailed examination
