Description
A mong Carlyle smany services to the world, an indirect one of considerable literary value was his mandate to Browning that he be the English poet to give the English peoples a really i Eschylean version of the A gamemnon. Since Elizabeth Barrett Browning had translated the Prometheus of i Eschylus, it was the happier chance that Robert Browning should have been led to companion that drama of gods and demigods in cloudland with the play peculiarly suited to his mass and vigor of touch, the more humanly heroic A gamemnon. Shortly after Elizabeth Browning sdeath, her husband, as if to fulfil the prevision of his after life given in By the Fireside, turned with fresh assiduity toward the Greek reading, of which she had been especially fond, and in which her scholarship was that of an expert. It was in 1862, the next year after her death, that he wrote of his sons boyish delight in his holidays and of his own great read at Euripides. There he is at it, deep in Greek, the young Browning actually whispered, then, no doubt, just as his fathers By the Fireside had foretold. At last, in lifes November, Browning s Attic period dawned in good earnest, and Landor sdesire of long before came true.
