Description
Lnn r1;n), in the PRITFCI2. IN olfering for school uso this edition of the poetry put-serihecl for noxt yearâs examinations, we are not sangnine enough to expect that it will escape lmfavonrahlc criticism. Ve have followed our own indgn-nt in regard to the natnuand amount ofthe help to he fnrnisln-d, and while wo have neither hoped nor desired to relieve teachers from teaching, or students from studying the poems, we have honestly t1 ied to lighten their lah ur in doing so. The object of the introduction is to supply necessary information in regard to the life and character of the author, and the inllnencvs that surrounded him ;that of the notes, to help candidates to a hetter lll(l UlS t2IÂll(llllg and appreciation of the poems, and at the same time to lead them to notice, think, and investigate for themselves. In writing both we have kept in mind that the book is designed for different grades of students, and that many who are likely to use it will have but little time or opportunity to consult good works of reference. For reasons which need not be mentioned, the work has heen done more hurriedly than we should have liked, and henec some omissions or mistakes may have been overlooked. Partly for the same reasons the notes on l VinÂcfr were Vl lllt Ull first, which will account for some of the references in the notes to A utumn. Lastly, while I am set down on the title page as joint editor witl lr. Moore, and while I accept my full share of the responsibility for the work, it is only fair to say that he deserves the credit of it. I have simply hr-en consulting and revising editor, and, except a few slight alterations and additions here and there, hoth introduction and notes appear substantially as they were vritten by him. I l. I. STILAN( UO l)ldlil Ull, July .$âU th, 587.
