Description
In 1907 I published a translation of the Eclogues and Georgics in Messrs. Dent s Everyman s Library. It is now out of print, and the present translation is a revised version, brought into line with Sir F. A. Hirtzel s Oxford text, which is printed together with it. Blank verse has been used throughout, except in parts of Eclogues iii., v., and vii., where rhyme seemed to me more suitable. The elegiacs with rhymed pentameters in the third Eclogue were a metrical experiment, since making which I have seen some lines by Captain A. G. Cowie in the same metre, quoted in the Classical Review for June, 1917. Swinburne s Evening on the Broads has double rhymes. In my Virgil and Isaiah (1918) I attempted a hexameter version of the fourth Eclogue, as well as a paraphrase in Biblical English; but it seemed unnecessary to reprint them in this book. I have nothing new to say on the problem of that Eclogue, but have revised my footnotes on it, adding some new matter, and recording a change of view on the text of the last line but one. This is the only place where I have departed from the Oxford text, and then only in one word. The notes are based on many years of miscellaneous reading, in the course of which I have made extracts from books of all kinds.
