The dragon Smaug had a mate and after his death and having no wings to search for another mate, she withered away inside a huge cave beneath the Lonely Mountain, but not before laying an egg that took a hundred years to hatch out, mainly because the egg contained a male dragon who came to be named Gaug.
Years have passed since the great deeds of the four Hobbits.
They have married and the families have grown.
