Sometimes it seems that the spirit and the joy of the Games have been somewhat lost to commercialism and the overpowering desire to focus only on victory. When controversy and partisanship take over, it is good to remember what was first said by a churchman during the 1908 London Games, which is still true today: "The important thing is not so much winning as taking part."
