Lydia Roberts is a twelve year old girl who has recently moved to a new area. When the motherless girl can no longer be looked after by her father, she is forced to go and live with her great aunt, and faces uncertainty in a new school having had to leave all her friends behind.

Then suddenly from nowhere appears a young girl who claims to be a 17th century witch, sent through time by her grandmother to avoid capture by the witch-finder general, Matthew Hopkins.

A friendship develops between the two girls and in no time at all the young witch takes on a new identity as she adapts to life in the 21st century. Changing her speech and learning all she can about her new way of life, she joins Lydia in school and takes care of bullies in the only way a witch can.
