This book explores the history of prostitution in India and explores how this has been analysed in Indian films, mainly in the Hindi mainstream cinema over from 1930 to 1998 through the kothewalli films to sex workers. It tries to understand whether thie politics of prostitution in cinema has been used for titillating the audience or to draw empathy and significance to sex workers in their screen portrayals. It studies films like Pakezah through Chetna to films like Aastha and Mausam.
