One of a nuclear Scientist, Mr. Naren Shekhawat who lost his whole family in the nuclear bombing of Shikohima in Japan in August,1945 and was the pioneer of India s first nuclear test in Kohran. The other is of Shantaram Pandey, a slum dweller being killed by the poisonous methyl isocyanate (MIC) gas from the American pesticide factory in Mauthganj. Coincidentally, Naren also dies on the same date in the same city by committing suicide.
Sitting on top of the MIC tank of the dismantled factory, Naren starts sharing his story with the rustic Shantaram.
Naren shekhawat s ancestors shifted to a small island town in Japan, Shikohima much before India got its independence. His father sends him to America for studying Physics at Broadview University in Utah due to the war conditions severely worsening in Japan. He leaves for Utah and joins his Mamaji, Mr. Amarnath Chouhan who although being stinking rich, works as a lecturer of Physics at Broadview University.
Naren shares his pain how after Little Lad, the nuclear bomb landed on Shikohima and turned the whole city into rubbles. Shantaram, although in awe of Naren occasionally puts up his story of how the slum dwellers got killed that night and how painful it was.
Naren meets Li Mei at the university and slowly fall in love with her. But fate has something else in store for him. Li Mei commits suicide after getting pregnant.
After completing his education, he comes to India, gets married to Sudha and joins the Scientists team who are working on the first nuclear bomb for India. Sudha, Naren s wife is not able to conceive and the complication in their relations increases. Successful in creating the bomb, they plan to do the testing at Kohran, an almost barren strip of land in Jaisalmer district of Rajasthan. The place is the habitat of Banjaras, Nomadic tribes who refuses to move. Neglecting the eminent danger of radioactive radiation, the team goes ahead with the testing. Meanwhile, Mr. Ramkrishan Bhujwal, the then Defense Minister sells the secret formula to an enemy country.
