Description
ALBATROSS JOURNALS is an historical yarn that weaves together impressment and servitude in the English Royal Navy, the War of 1812 (specifically, the Battle of Plattsburgh on Sep 11, 1814), a massacre in the South Pacific and life in 19th century Sweden, all knitted around a man who finds his son. Threaded through the story is a minor secondary narrative by way of contemporary diary entries, with unwitting links to the primary tale, and which is affirmation of the paths and circles of life, and that life itself continues.
While a work of fiction, it does draw upon real events, and real people.
The work is a complex radial narrative in the style of ‘Captain Corelli’s Mandolin’, with a non-linear narrative in the tradition of T C Boyle’s ‘Water Music’, in a voice perhaps reminiscent of the elegant, rhythmic prose of William Trevor or David Malouf, punctuated on occasion by violence, death and good humour.
