Description
It was the holiest day of the Jewish year.
It was Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. Jewish people all over the world traditionally observe this day with a 25-hour period of fasting and intensive prayer, often spending most of the day in synagogue services.
In the Arab world, Saturday 6th October 1973 was the 10th day of Ramadan, a time when Muslims all over the world fast for 30 days during the daylight hours. For centuries this was a time to purify the soul, to refocus attention on God, and to practice self-sacrifice.
This was also the day Egypt and Syria struck at Israel. Knowing that on this day Israel’s defenses would be down, their collective aim was to destroy Israel once and for all and to reclaim all the territories they lost to Israel in the 1967 Six Day War. Israel had two choices: face a second Holocaust, or fight to the finish.
Israel survived to fight – and live – another day. But for how long? How long before Israel’s many enemies try again, this time with a nuclear war head pointed at Jerusalem?
