Description

AT PRESENT THIS BOOK EXISTS ONLY IN ITS PHYSICAL FORM: Few more copies are available. But I want make a digital edition of the book. The following is a short description of the Book "The Reign of God and the Establishment of Dharma" by Rev. Dr. Sudil IMS.

This book is a popular edition of my Doctoral Thesis in Biblical Theology. It makes an effort to understand one of the most important concept of the Bible " The Reign of God" in relation to important concept in Hinduism "Establishment Dharma".
In the Gospel of Mark Jesus says, " The time is fulfilled, and the Kingdom of God is at hand; repent, and believe in the Gospel (Mk. 1:15). In relation to this Gospel text I have made a study of a text from Bhagavat Geeta in which Lord Krishna tells Arjuna, " Whenever there is a decline of Dharma and rise of adharma, O Bharata, (Arjuna) then I send forth myself. For the protection of the good, for the destruction of the wicked and for the establishment of Dharma. I come into being from age to age (BG. 4: 7-8).
Jesus speaks of the Reign of God or the Kingdom of God in a very positive language. According to biblical understand of this concept, when God reigns the goodness of the Universe will be reestablished. According to Biblical Book of Genesis, when God created the Universe, everything was good (Gen. Chapter 1). God created everything good and the human beings in his own image. Due to some disruption of this original creation, lots of not-good elements entered the universe. Jesus came to rectify them and to re-establish the Reign of God in the universe by which everything will be good once and the human beings will regain the image of God. This process is going on.
In my research I found this human longing for goodness is found in all the religious and in the heart of every human person. In India this idea is very clearly promoted by the Books of Vedas and Bhagavad Geeta and also later books of Vatmiki Ramayana. Dharma is the "rta" of the universe where everything is whole. As in the Biblical tradition, the "rta" was lost and adharma came to the universe. The theology of "avatar' came in hope that one day God will re-establish the Dharma of the Universe. Bhagavad Geeta speaks about this divine effort. The last chapter of Vatmiki Ramayana also speaks about such a situation where all goodness is re-established when the rule of Ram comes to existence.

The book consists of THREE parts and SIX chapters. The first part in two chapters studies the Synoptic background of the "the Reign of God" and the Geeta Background the concept of Dharma. The Reign of God is the central teaching of of Jesus and the Synoptic Gospels. Jesus proclaimed the Reign of God both in word and deed (Mk. 1:14-15; Luke. 4:43; Mt. 4: 17 & 23). According to the synoptic Gospels, the Reign of God is a present reality. It brings wholeness to the people and the universe by liberating them from sin, sickness, death, socio-religious and political oppression and slavery. (Luke. 7:20-23; Mt. 4.23; Mk. 3:10). Though it is a present reality, it is oriented to a final fulfillment (Mk. 14:25). The Bhagavad Geeta tries to organize various human communities in India in all their grades of development into one peaceful, well oriented and progressive society. This ideal society, like the Kingdom of God in the Gospels, will be established according to the ancient and ever lasting principle of Dharma. Dharma is that which holds and sustains a thing in its wholeness and well being.
The PART 2 of the book studies in detail the origins of the concepts of the Reign of God and the Establishment of Dharma. This part dwells deep into the understanding and meaning of term " Reign of God" in the Biblical and Christian tradition and understanding and meaning of the concept "the Establishment Dharma in the Hindu and Indian Tradition.
The FOURTH part is the conclusion of the research and its relevant findings both for the Christian community and Hindu community. Rev. Dr. Sudil
