My research on this project started in 1995 when I came to know the late medicine man Rolling Thunder, who passed in 1997. He told me that one day, probably in my own lifetime, people would come to realize the true age and advancement of Native American cultures, and would be amazed. My travels have taken me from arctic communities in Greenland to glacial mountains in Peru, to Oklahoma, and even to Europe. And "RT" was right, I've been constantly amazed!
Until recently, the oral tradition was the only tradition we had, and each story was understood to have deeper and deeper layers of meaning, unlocking the history of our interrelation with other nations (human, plant, animal, and angelic). Would it surprise you to know that we use the same or similar words and images as some nations in South America and Central America?
Our stories also reveal deep meanings about the nature that surrounds us, and the nature of our own psyche, which is also revealed in the Calendar.
While it has fallen into disuse, replaced by the modern Gregorian calendar, there is a traditional Cherokee calendar. In fact, it is 22 overlapping calendars. While it is clearly a descendant of the calendars that were used by the Mayan, Aztec, and perhaps Olmec peoples of Central America, it differences from these reveal the 'otherness' of Cherokee culture and thought. There is a chain of prophecies which start before 1492, and which extend to 2012 and beyond.
Cherokee cosmology, along with that of other indigenous nations, is a series of catastrophic destruction and near-extinction events, with the human survivors building the "world." The "due date" for the labor pains of the Sixth World is December 21, 2012. We are currently in the seven year period of 'crazy weather' preceding 2012, with ever stronger volcanic, seismic, gravitational and even solar disturbances anticipated. According to the Calendar, we could even expect our non-human neighbors to reveal themselves - soon!
Some nations keep detailed prophecies extending into the 26th century. There is even a predicted Seventh World. Many of these prophecies have a time component that can be understood through the Calendar.
