Penn and a small group of companions manage to escape only to find that living outside the dome presents new challenges. After struggling to survive in the sparsely populated landscape they’re taken in by Bernard and shown how to live in the world. But two members of the group have important parts to play in Howell’s breeding programme; finally he hunts them down, snatching the youngest and killing Bernard in the process. The others have to keep running, trying to find someone who will support them in bringing an end to the darkness of the Dome system once and for all.
