World War Two: Arctic Convoy - Battle of North Cape: Maps, Photographs and Famous Leaders.

During WW2 the arctic convoys endured treacherous weather and heavy bombardment from the Luftwaffe and U-boats, as they sailed perilously close to Nazi occupied Norway. Many ships and young seamen were lost at sea, as the convoys brought vital aid to the Russian ports of Archangel and Murmansk. However, the advent of new technology such as; ASDIC, an earlier form of sonar; the Enigma Machine and anti-submarine weapons, helped the arctic convoys fight back, during the four arduous years of their campaign.

The Russian convoys were escorted by the British navy, American navy and the Canadian navy. My late father, John Richards, then 20, served on the 'Fort Astoria,' which was part of the JW.55A/JW.55B convoys, which led to the Battle of North Cape. This famous naval battle climaxed with the sinking of the German battle cruiser, 'The Scharnhorst,' and the loss of nearly 2,000 German sailors.
