Dorrie smelled smoke almost a block before the condo came into view. When it did, her stomach churned and she thought she might be sick. The entire building was black, twisted, gutted. Everything she owned - and since the divorce, that wasn't much - had gone up in flames.
Susan took her hand. "Thank god you weren't at home," she said.
"Whoever did this probably thought I was," Dorrie said. "I have all the lights on a timer system, and at this time in the evening, they would have been on."
"You could have been hurt!"
"Anyone who was here when that fire broke out would have been more than hurt," Detective Riley said. "They would have been killed."
