Thirteen-Year-Old Amory Townsend is in a car wreck that claims his father's life and puts him into a coma for three months. He wakes up with amnesia and struggles to adapt to the new reality of home life and can only find solace when his own doppelganger begins to appear before him.

He struggles to adapt to the new reality of home life without a father. He starts to see a psychiatrist and tries to go back to school despite the fact that he wouldn't be able to move to the next grade because he was absent so many days.
His mother tries to get him to move on while ignore the fact that he can't because of all the unresolved feelings revolving around not knowing what happened. He tries to interact with his friends, but he is unable to.
He begins to see a ghost of himself from when he briefly died during the car wreck. The ghost becomes his friend, comforts him and takes him into a fantasy world that mimics how Amory's subconscious sees the world.
