THE VALLEY OF FEAR was the fourth Sherlock Holmes novel written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The book was first published in New York on February 27, 1915. The novel was based on the real life experiences of James McParland with the Molly Maguires, a secret terrorist society. James McParland was an agent with the Pinkerton National Detective Agency hired to infiltrate the secret society.
