Description
Beyond Indiana Jones: An Archaeologist Looks at the Bible Stories
How Can Archaeology Help Us Better Understand the Bible Stories
Before Indiana Jones came to Petra (in Jordan), that site had been known to Alexander the Great, well known to King Herod the Great, known to Saint Paul, and long before them, the Petra area was inhabited by the Edomites, descendants of Esau, brother to Jacob.
The large-scale excavation at Tel Miqne-Ekron (Israel), completed in 1996, is in the final publishing stage of its findings. The temple inscription found in the 1996 season clarifies without a doubt that the site is the Philistine capital city of Ekron mentioned in the Bible. The Philistines were Israel’s enemy for at least six hundred years. The site can now be called “Ekron” rather than “Tel Miqne-Ekron.” The inscription names the Philistine rulers of Ekron and the deity of its excavated temple. Ekron has produced the most comprehensive corpus of Philistine material culture dated to the Iron Age (1200 to 600 B.C.).
Archaeology is a time machine built to help us answer the question “What do these stones mean?” (Joshua 4:21).
The Indiana Jones movie showed you only one tomb, but Petra has more than 700 other tombs. This series, with a major emphasis on photography, will show you many others and explain how the Nabataeans built them and how they survived in this desert region.
We will travel to Upper Egypt to visit with the Black Pharaoh Dynasty and discover how they fit into Israel's history. Far to the north in Turkey is Pergamum, where Satan had his throne. Far to the East is Persia's Persepolis, visited by Alexander the Great and far to the west in Spain is Santiago de Compostela, a city that also fits into the Bible stories. The stones at 100s of sites will be uncovered and viewed and explained.
