📖 Description
Take a stroll through the cobbled lanes and forbidding walls of medieval history, marvel at the arched entrances and pause in the beautiful squares and courtyards of yesteryear. When you find yourself within the Old Town of the capital of Rhodes, it is easy to imagine the celebrated Knights of Rhodes rushing back in to take center stage, but in truth, the history of the island of Rhodes goes back much further.
The island favors visitors with a generous helping of beautiful sights as well as plenty of historic flavor and character. There are still many reminders in the ruins and architecture of the island to the splendor of past eras and many of the smaller villages have retained some of their timeless medieval ambiance. Its beaches and waters are pristine and make for ideal bathing and diving conditions and its interior is lush and fertile, including beautiful reserves such as the Valley of Butterflies and Epta Piges or Seven Springs Another perk is that the island of Rhodes is relatively crime-free. The town of Afandou has an 18-hole golf course.
The author Lawrence Durrell was posted in Rhodes between 1945 and 1947, but in more recent times, the island attracted other celebrities. The town of Lindos was a favorite of the band Pink Floyd and the band's guitarist Dave Gilmour still owns property there. When the film ‘The Guns of Navarone’ was shot around Ladiko Bay, Hollywood actor Anthony Quinn bought a considerable portion of land in Ladiko Bay. A bay in the area is named after him.
