Description

This is the fourth part of F.M. Khan's book "The Story of Gilgit-Baltistan & Chitral." From the title it is obvious that this part of the book deals with a hero of the Liberation War of Gilgit-Baltistan, Colonel Hassan, and Kashmir.

The author writes: "Colonel Mirza Hassan Khan was a Major in the forces of the Maharaja of Jammu and Kashmir at the time of the Liberation War of Gilgit-Baltistan. He was the leader of the putsch in 1947. He was born in 1916 and was a native Gilgiti. He graduated from the famous Deradhon Military Academy (India). After completing the two-and-a-half year-long course, he was commissioned as a second-lieutenant in 1938. He fought the World War II in Burma as a Major and was awarded the coveted Military Cross (MC).

"After the world war, his services were given to the Sixth Jammu and Kashmir Infantry to serve in his native Gilgit region. He reached Bunji garrison in early August 1947. At that time, he was a Major and his total length of service was ten years including five-year’s war experience.

"Those officers who were directly and practically involved in the revolution on November 1, 1947, in their recorded statements, have confirmed that Mirza Hassan Khan was the moving spirit and leader of the revolution in Gilgit-Baltistan. He led Kashmir infantry’s Muslim troops and the Gilgit Scouts to victory and liberated Gilgit from the subjugation of the Maharaja of Kashmir."
