Ulysses heard her and turned back to hiss, “What’s with this botherin’. Am I botherin’ you son? Get out of here woman. We havin’ a talk here, man to man. Am I botherin’ you Caa-lum? Tell her.”

I smiled and told Betty I was fine.

Ulysses keenly informed her, “He come here for an American woman. All the way ‘cross the Atlantic for an American woman. You better watch yourself honey. Huh? Ain’t that right Caa-lum? Come here for an American woman.”

The old ladies were silent, listening in on our conversation. The visor lady had turned in her seat again, waiting to see what Betty would say. It seemed like everyone in earshot was listening for her answer.
