Description
‘A Ten Year Old’s Guide to Owning a Spaceship’, is a science fiction adventure for ten to sixteen year olds about an ordinary boy called Archie, who (through no fault of his own) becomes ‘The Pilot’, and therefore the most important person in the world.
Archimedes Jones is a very average ten year old, until he finds a spaceship under a greenhouse. This odd event takes place when Archie’s parents drop him off for his annual summer holiday stay, with his grandparents in North Wales. He finds a strange pentagonal object under the floorboards of his granddad's greenhouse, which leads him underground, to a spaceship and its two robot occupants, who have been in deep hibernation - waiting for a new pilot to arrive.
Archie discovers that the ship, Alderbaran, is his and that - as The Pilot- he has an important task, a task he must complete before he hits the age of sixteen, when his memories will be deleted.
Alderbaran is last remaining of four guard ships, left behind twelve thousand years ago, by an ancient alien race, to recapture prisoners after a mass break out. The prison had been designed and purpose built to secure them – a prison known as Atlantis.
Unfortunately the task had taken longer than expected and the descendents of these alien prisoners had integrated into human society, becoming super criminals. The most dangerous and powerful descendent is called Siphon. Siphon wants Alderbaran for himself, to use as a tool to take over the world.
With help from a robot called Regulas – a small heavy metal loving robot who likes to cuddle sharks - a talking cat and an argumentative assistant ten year old girl called Nicola Smith, Archie must retrieve the spare key of his space ship before Siphon beats them to it. The key is hidden beneath The Pentagon in Washington DC, and is guarded by two agents from a mysterious government organisation called Majestic Twelve, and an old man, known only as The Vendor. Using an array of futuristic gadgets, including a device which disguises its wearers as adults, and paralysing water pistols, Archie and his team must outsmart the agents and their security systems to reach their goal.
As the story develops, Alderbaran picks up an emergency beacon from an occupant of one of the three lost ships. A robot called Vega, who is being held hostage by Siphon in an old Atlantian tower, which is located deep under the ocean near Bermuda. Archie launches a rescue mission, and must find his way up through the tower to reach Vega before it is too late. Along the way he encounters the two majestic twelve agents, and a pet seal called Rex, before having a climactic encounter with the super criminal, Siphon.
