The author's second novella centered around Jesse McCann picks up in 1913. Jesse is in charge of a sprawling East Texas saw mill empire inherited by his wife Annie but is still in some way the West Texas "greenhorn" who came in search of his father twenty-five years earlier. Parents of the twenty-year old Katie, with another child on the way, their peaceful and prosperous life is changed forever by events that defy logic. Jesse fights for survival against a long-time adversary and mill hand violence, while a seemingly possessed Annie struggles to protect her unborn child and her own sanity. Returning to book two are Buck, the one-legged old lumberjack and a secret guardian spirit: Jesse's allies in this tale of mysterious forces and human frailties. The story is both nostalgic and suspenseful, with fast action and descriptive scenes that will keep the reader involved.
