Description

The book is intended as a reference work to supplement a course of study in industrial maintenance.
The material presented here is based on the course notes and hand-outs used by the author during a multi-skill maintenance training programme with a major motor manufacturer. The courses were designed and run for mechanical maintenance technicians and maintenance electricians to allow closer co-operation within the maintenance teams In addition the successful candidates were encouraged to obtain an NVQ vocational qualification.
It starts with the basic concept of an electrical control system and then moves on to the components that are used input the machine status and those that cause the machine to respond. These are the so-called sensors and actuators that are common to nearly all controller types whether they are simple or complex.
The components covered include; relays, switches, contactors, solenoids, reed switches temperature sensors photoelectric sensing, and proximity sensors of various types.
How they work and how they can be used is described in a readable style that is suitable for those starting out on a career in industrial maintenance.
The symbols for these components are introduced along with representative circuit diagrams and schematics to show how they can be connected together to form a basic control system.
The standards for symbols and voltages are those used in the U.K. and Europe, readers in other parts of the world must be aware that there will be different standards used where they are. However the underlying principles and methods are common no matter where you are. A cross reference to some international and USA symbols is provided in an appendix.
