Description
Travel through the Depression, the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Iwo Jima and the next seven decades with this Marine Corpsman turned minister. Inspiring, funny, dramatic and motivational are what readers have said about this book. It provides an easy read with a word of guidance and devotion at the end of each short chapter.
Chapter 26 talks about the Battle of Iwo Jima: "I don’t remember how close we were to the beach before we were shelled. It was surreal. I could hear it and feel the thud and shuddering of the Higgins. I don’t know if the back of the boat ever came down like it was supposed to, or if it was just blown off. I was later told that I was the only one to get off that boat alive and I am glad I didn’t know that at the time. I had seen deceased people of course, but was not prepared to see the body of my best friend float by, as I stumbled off the wreckage of the boat. The noise was deafening and I remember thinking “what happened?”
Don't miss Chapter 45 which talks about the miracle in the mail box and of course the hilarious but touching account of a funeral service gone wrong in Chapter 73: "As they began to dig the grave, the cold Oregon rain began to turn the ground to mud and the family grew tired as they struggled to make the grave the required depth. Unfortunately, their concentration was more on depth and less on width which was to be my downfall…literally. With no one to carry the coffin to the gravesite, and at the risk of sounding like I am starting a bad joke, the undertaker, a police officer and I performed that task."
This book is written as a tribute to a father from his daughter using notes, journals and accounts from other family members and promises to leave a lasting memory and a blessing for all who read it!
