Det. Rosemary Cooper, NYPD woke in a strange bed, forty-seven pounds lighter, one month in the past, married to a man she didn’t know, in a reality not her own. A reality where cars fly and streets are lit by gaslight, and mansions have replaced the New York skyline.
No one is willing to give her answers to her questions except to say that she had been shot, in and out of a catatonic state for the past three years, during which time her sister, Viv had been murdered.
She didn’t believe them. Her memories of her sister, tall buildings, noisy streets, her mother, Mark, and Ryan are too vivid to be her imagination.
When she visits to the 22nd Prescient, and Sergeant Farrell calls her by name, she believes her pesky time travel genie has zapped her back to her own reality. Yet things are wrong. Her partner, Detective Vance looks through her with no signs of recognition, and Sergeant Farrell confirms she has been ill for three years. Did she really belong in this topsy-turvy world?
Her memory was not of being shot, but of suffering extensive brain trauma which left her with the ability to travel back in time. Had that life been no more than imagination while she languished in a catatonic state? If that were the case, now that she is awake and able to return to her position on the force, why doesn’t she have any memories of this reality?
The answer to her question comes the next morning when she walks through the door to the Twenty-Second and finds she is back in her own reality. She also finds that she had investigated the murder of a young couple on their honeymoon, shot to death in their five star hotel suite. No one heard the shots. The CSI team found no blood splatter. Surveillance cameras showed the couple leaving their room the night before. After only the maid is on camera entering the room until the waiter found the bodies when he delivered a preordered breakfast early the next morning.
Before she gets a chance to investigate further, she is zapped back to the topsy-turvy reality, and soon realizes the Det. Rosemary Cooper of that reality, has now taken over her life, her job, family, friends —Ryan—in her time and place.
How had this happened? Why had it happened?
