Rebecca Jean Chamberlain and the Key to Doppledorp

Rebecca Jean Chamberlain is a ten-year-old with red hair, freckles, and low self-esteem. All of her attempts to be good at something are unsuccessful. Everyone, in her mind, seems out to get her: her piano teacher, who will later emerge as the saving grace of the story; her big brother Norman, her source of teasing and tormenting at home; and the class bully, Hecky Burdock, a round little boy who amuses himself by driving Rebecca Jean nuts. In addition, she is generally humiliated by circumstances beyond her control that seem to happen on a regular basis. Her only solace is taking refuge inside the knee hole of her dresser behind the curtains, a place where she finds peace and where she keeps a list of all who cross her. One stormy day, when her parents are arguing loudly with her brother, she accidentally slams her head against the wall and tumbles through to an amazing village in which she becomes a little hero. There she meets her look-alike, Greta Wimble, and becomes involved with the problems of the Wimble family. When Rebecca Jean helps the Wimbles win the race and keep their home, she realizes just how smart she really is and learns to deal with many of her own problems. When she returns to her world, she has more confidence in herself and more understanding of those around her.
