Description
Volume two of our hero's recovery. Life on his return home is no longer riotous and drug-assisted. The humour's still there, but as he strives to take control of his changed life, meandering thought processes seek to deflect him from the path of recovery. He wanders off into tangential musings on the world outside that he no longer feels a part of. In his confused mental state he lurches from one mood to the other, flitting from the present to the past, increasingly unable to distinguish between the two. His whole life becomes a shapeless blur into which he no longer seems to fit. He constantly seeks to bring himself back to earth by self-discipline and a process of recording things on paper, much of it with crayons. This in itself becomes highly coloured by his psychological state, which continually undermines his resolve.
Not till volume three will he finally be able to get a grip on his own rehabilitation and allow the pace to pick up as his life begins to take describable form once more.
It is still not recommended that you read this in public places. You may still erupt in raucous laughter. Or you may cry, like Rod, the hero's wife, who cannot bring herself to read it. Or you may gasp in frustration and confusion, but that's all part of it. You're living through it with him. That's best done in private. Listen to the voice of experience.
And remember, Volume 2 will make little sense unless you have first read Volume 1, Nil by Mouth. You now know where to start. Which is more than we can yet say for our hero.
And remember also, these books are a good read, but the author doesn't give a stuff about marketing. He's too busy writing the third and final volume. Chance your arm. What's five bucks/three quid out of anyone's shopping money?
