Description
"What we see depends mainly on what we look for."
From the get go, The Magician’s Trick will leave you in a state of confusion, but in a gripping way. You’ll be asking yourself, “Why the hell did Malcolm Froglie jump?†Now allow Malcolm to explain his story. The tragedy occurs in the early years of the new millennium, but Malcolm takes you back to the mid-nineties where it all began. When he was very young, his parents, especially his father, were keen to escape London for life in the countryside, Tetbury in the Cotswold district of Gloucestershire. Although Malcolm opposed it and never really understood why they had to leave everything behind and start anew, it was in Tetbury that his love for art, in particular, painting amplified.
Years go by before the ordinarily quiet Malcolm meets his soul mate, Angela Vinson, as an adolescent and the pair instantly fall in love. She is a bright, sensible girl and a student enrolled in his mother’s dancing classes. It’s also round about that time that Malcolm befriends the local bad boys, Jamie Diamond and Landen Armstrong against Angela’s wishes. He also has a fleeting encounter with Jamie’s younger sister, Felicity, who instantly falls in love with him, apparently against Jamie’s wishes.
When Malcolm is discharged from hospital after waking from a coma, having been in a car accident involving who else but Jamie and Landen, he walks in on Angela and his parents having a row. It’s then that he discovers the truth and mystery of his parent’s relationship and how it all connects to him. It was the reason they left London in the first place.
The truth is so terrible Malcolm immediately makes plans to return to London as means of escape, gambling on his ability as a painting to earn him a living. He entrusts an old friend, Eric Moor, ‘The buzz-man’ to guide him into household name status. The remorseful Jamie accompanies Malcolm, Angela does so months later. But things begin to spiral out of control when Felicity decides to setup in London as well to find work as a model.
Malcolm grapples with issues that many a young artist is confronted with, namely, infidelity and substance abuse. His psychologist (hired by Jamie to help Malcolm) eventually diagnoses him with an apparent condition he calls ‘The Magician’s Trick’ after a famous Italian Magician. It was either triggered by his car accident or may have genetic roots. The condition affects just over 2% of the population.
Once diagnosed, Malcolm’s psychologist realises that the evidence of his condition is splattered all over his paintings and it concerns Angela, Felicity, Jamie and his parents. Lies upon lies, even the world is lying to him. The ramification is earth shattering and life changing... and not in a good way.
The Magician's Trick is Malcolm's struggle to explain the peculiar circumstances that led him to make an attempt on his own life.
Author Bio
Darcy Pelovangu grew up in London in the nineties and into the millennium. He is currently still living in London. The ideas in his books are a mixture of his own experiences and passionate studying of subjects that have long fascinated him, in particular the human mind’s power to perceive and live in a reality of its own as well as someone else’s making by either accepting or rejecting aspects of society’s hegemonies. His books aim to highlight this paradox with intricate story lines and plots, characters that oppose and support such views and suspenseful endings. He attended St Ignatius 6th form College, incidentally the same school as one of his biggest inspirations, the legendary movie director, Sir Alfred Hitchcock. He also sites director, Christopher Nolan, as a major inspiration. His readers will be left in no doubt that the world isn’t always quite what it appears to be and that everything is possible for someone who believes so.
