In his early works, poet Michael J. Vaughn not only used music as his subject, but incorporated music into his syntax, creating verses that sing, crescendo and syncopate. The centerpiece is his series of opera poems, in which he takes iconic figures - Cavaradossi, Marcello, Carmen - and places them in modern situations.
