The story of two young friends struggling to live in autarky in the high Auvergne during the 2nd world war. Suddenly they have to leavedue to an incident whilst in the resistance, when they killed two germans. They decide to leave home to prevent reprisals to their family. They decide to travel to Spain, via Le Puy and then onto Sete, here they decidenot to travel to Spain but to travel to Corsica and re-join the resistance. After a hazadous time with the resistancethey join Operation Dragoon and are transported to the South of France, where they help liberate Marseille. They do not travel north with the army but return to their village in the Auvergne here the harsh post-war economic conditions drive them from the village to Marseille. This journey takes three years of their young lives during which time we learn about their inter-relationships, their friends and how they actually survived this formidable timewhich covers occupation,resistance and war.
The second journey is how the two of them with friends from the Auvergne and Corsica made a living and created a company in the post-war year's building boom in France. How they learn modern construction methods for flats, schools and villas. They slowly grow prosperous in growing economy as France returns to normality. Also the rise of Casey as the acknowledged leader.
