Description
This monograph contains a pataphysical analysis of certain mathematical beliefs. While mathematics in general is considered a ‘hard’ (or factual) science, some fundamental concepts fail even a less-than-rigorous analysis and stray into the realm of a belief system. The failure of mathematics to properly represent real-world experience by substituting a belief system can lead practitioners to highly erroneous conclusions.

This monograph offers an alternative method for the mathematical treatment of the number zero which would then bring applied mathematics closer to experiential reality. Indeed, certain common functions, such as negative numbers retain questionable relationships with reality.

However, irrational numbers clearly illustrate where mathematics, in a pedantic and almost desperate search to avoid porismatic dichotomies, invents imaginary solutions to an equally imaginary problems. The real paradox would be finding such imaginings useful in practical applications.

The paper alludes to historical figures, with Ancient Greek, Roman and far east perspectives on various mathematical thought. Toss in some wry humor, mix thoroughly with scholarly detail and you get the same ground plowed over with an entirely new furrow.
