Expatriates in Paradise: The (Re)Founding of San Miguel de Allende

Interested in moving abroad? Know someone who has? Curious about what effect Americans or other people from developed countries have on their host states? In this book, I examine the history of San Miguel de Allende, Mexico in order to explore the "expatriate" phenomenon and how it has affected the history of one town in particular. After briefly covering the founding of the town during colonial Mexico, the book focuses on the arrival of the first Americans, including Stirling Dickinson in 1937. Then, the book pivots to examine what the cumulative impact of these expats have been. Why did they come to San Miguel? How have they transformed it? What lessons does this have for similar sites of non-traditional migration across the developing world? How do these lessons or this history impact people considering a move to Mexico or other developing states today?
