Description
Reading this Newberry Award-winning book by Robert C. O'Brien will be even richer with the use of this 12-page study guide by Sabrina Justison. It includes vocabulary, comprehension questions for each chapter, and Going Deeper questions for more mature students. The book and study guide are geared to 3rd through 8th grade and can be adjusted for different age groups. (Please note: This is a study guide ONLY. The book itself must be obtained separately.)
For younger children, the comprehension questions for each chapter help them maintain focus on the plot line, keep characters straight in their minds, and anticipate possible twists and turns in the story. The idea of a story told mostly chronologically but with one long flashback is introduced.
For older students (6th-8th graders, perhaps), this book offers a great introduction to the concept of PERSPECTIVE. Going Deeper questions help them note the varying literal perspectives in the story (visually speaking), the different points of view of different characters, and the developing and changing perspectives of individual characters as the story progresses.
Literary Elements in Focus:
Plot
Perspective/Point of View (literally and metaphorically)
Chronology/Flashback
Age Levels:
Elementary School (read-aloud or independent reading, vocabulary, comprehension questions)
Middle School (independent reading, written answers to comprehension questions optional, going deeper literary analysis)
Note: This study guide does NOT include an answer key, as it is assumed that the parent/teacher will be working through the book with the student.
