Shakespeare’s wondrous tragicomedy The Tempest tells the story of the wizard Prospero, usurped from his rightful place as Duke of Milan by his wicked brother Sebastian and stranded on a remote island. Many historians believe that this play, estimated to have been written around 1610, was the last that Shakespeare produced and as such, it constituted his “farewell” to the world of courtly theater. If so, he went out with remarkable style, as the story abounds in fanciful characters like island native Caliban and the spirit Ariel, as well as stage directions for considerable special effects, including the eponymous tempest.
