From the author: The dense, ornate composition of E. R. Eddison's Zimiamvia cycle has long obscured its ideological content, leading to errors in the scholarly reception of these books. Written with close reference to the working papers for the first Zimiamvian novel, Mistress of Mistresses, this article seeks to correct those mistakes. Although verbose, Eddison's novels are shown to have been anything but gratuitous, being composed in strict accordance with an extensive, dearly held, deceptively humane reworking of moral philosophy. Rather than being the reactionary hedonist some commentators have painted him as, Eddison is revealed to have been a very disciplined writer given to connecting thought and feeling in ways for which he has not yet been properly appreciated.
