Synopsis:
Seeing things before they happen has made twenty-four year old Kali Lockton quite the celebrity in the elemental world, only the attention is far from good. In fact, she lives each day with a target over her head. Her only defenses are her visions and Jared Miles, the man who holds her heart and has made it his duty to protect her from his own world.
When both of those things are jeopardized, Kali is forced to retreat from her safety net and put her trust in the dangerously sexy Alexander Payne, someone she's always viewed as manipulative and self-serving.
Just when Kali believes her life couldn't unravel further, everything she's known about herself, including her value to the elemental world, disintegrates with a few shocking revelations. Kali learns she is not only the key to an elemental king's power, but that she carries the responsibility of the continued existence of worlds she's learned to fear, people she's never met, and the ones she loves dearly. But such responsibility never comes without a price.
Excerpt:
As I swept the wooden floors, nearly finishing, Jared stormed in, his anger contorting his face. I met his eyes, momentarily halting my cleaning duties as he closed in on me by taking long strides. In an instant, his lips were on mine. One hand gripped my ponytail, pulling it back, forcing me to tilt my head to accept his kiss. Everything around me swirled and went hazy. It took me a minute to recoup and react. His kiss was fierce, passionate, and angry, as his lips forced mine to part. I failed to match his intensity, but eventually, opened my mouth more, and welcomed him. I was unable to resist him, and with my heart swelling again, I felt good again. I didn’t know how much longer I could take the emotional roller coaster. It wasn’t healthy. It wasn’t good. I couldn’t say no either way. I wasn’t strong enough to resist him, not when my heart still hurt so much.
It wasn’t the reaction I expected to get. I prepared myself for a verbal lashing, or for his fist to pummel through something else. Maybe I wanted to resume my anger again; it was the only thing that kept me glued together. But as his other arm swung around my waist and pulled me hard into him, slamming my body into his, my breath caught, my chest fluttered, and I felt weak from elation.
I closed my eyes, and his lips left mine, while his hand dropped instantly from my ponytail. He pulled away, his fierce green eyes boring into mine when I dazedly opened mine again. His jaw clenched and his features hardened.
“Don’t you ever do that to me again.†His voice was low and hammered my ears like a furious growl.
I swallowed hard, still trying to regain control, and slow down my beating heart. I looked back at him, out of breath, my eyes big, but didn’t respond.
The muscles in his jaw vibrated as he continued to gaze down at me. “My feelings for you haven’t changed. I’m not leaving because I don’t want you. I’m leaving because I have to.†I started to speak, but he continued. “You’re still the most important thing to me; you’re still my number one priority and will always be. I know I’ve hurt you.†He grimaced as the words left his mouth and took in a calming breath. “I know this is difficult for you. It’s difficult for me.†He ran an agitated hand through his hair, his heated gaze melting into mine. “I know I’m not deserving, but please, just allow me to ensure your safety, to make sure you’re protected. You’ll be the death of my sanity if you keep testing the boundaries.â€
