Description
Ghazal is a principal form of poetry and the oldest musical form that still exists and being practised starting from 7/8th century. It originated in Arab and prospered in Persia and India. Ghazal is being loved by connoisseurs and laymen as it deals with the subject of eternal interest, i.e. failure and success in love.
North Indians, especially the youths are very fond of reciting shers, the couplets, which are the part of any ghazal. Because of the ghazal songs in Hindi films and the eminent singers like Begam Akhtar, Mehdi Hasan, Ghulam Ali, Farida Khanum, Jagjit Singh, Hariharan, Saigal, Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosale, the ghazal has become a very familiar, popular and interesting form of vocal music.
Ghazal verses and ghazal songs are very close to the heart of the teenagers in love even today, though they are getting too much westermized by apparel, food, culture and etiquette because of its sentimental value and melodic appeal.
A lot of superficial as well as useful information on ghazal are available on the internet. I have written this book for those who want to know various interesting facets of ghazal going into the depth of this lyrical form.
This book contains 18 chapters on various aspects of ghazal, e.g. what is a ghazal, ghazal terminology, literary and musical evolution of ghazals, musical structure of ghazals, influence of Indian musical forms on the ghazals, ghazal shaayars, female ghazal composers, nobles who enriched ghazals with their poetry, progressive themes in ghazals, styles of ghazal singing, classical raags used in ghazals, taals or rhythms used in ghazals, uncommon facets of ghazals, ghazals in other languages, etc.
