Description
'In No Need of Air' is a young adult novel about a family living an alternative lifestyle caught up in the perils of opening up to society. Emmy doesn’t want anything to change. Yet everything is. Up until now, she’s led a sheltered life in an alternative lifestyle with her anxiety riddled mother. Their day to day lives are simple and shared with another family, Maya, Kristian and their son Sebastian. It’s an existence filled with picking berries, harvesting vegetables, making wine, tending goats, going to market day and being home schooled. Emmy has everything she needs, but Sebastian has had enough of that life and is seeking more freedom, new friendships and open access to girls.
His persistence exposes them to threats from the outside world. Animosity, jealousy and judgement from others push Emmy and Sebastian closer. But ultimately coping with the death of a parent makes them turn to each other in a way Sebastian always hoped for but Emmy had never imagined.
Waves of threat from the outside world continue to place Emmy in jeopardy. Her greatest fear is to become the subject of a news headline. A town prophecy is stirred up, expecting Emmy to die by drowning in Mercy River, just as her relatives have. Will Sebastian’s love and desire for normality be the things that render Emmy vulnerable to the same watery grave that has claimed her family? Just when she finally seems to be breaking free, finding love, carving new friendships and making sense of the madness, death becomes a very real possibility.
'In No Need of Air' is a YA coming of age drama with family and belonging, self-esteem and self reliance at its core. It’s set in a world that judges alternative lifestyles and people who don’t fit.The story shows how our anxiety and deep seated fears can stop us from being our truest selves. It is a love story that can be enjoyed by adults and teens alike.
