This book is a reader on women's issues in nursing, broadly conceived. Although there are certainly men in nursing, it has traditionally been and continues to be primarily a woman's profession, characterized by all the difficulties and strengths of women in our society. The issues that face nursing "reality shock, "burnout", drop out, job distractions, are not isolated phenomena and should be looked at within the context of women's issues. Whether we like it or not whether we hope things will change or not the fact remains that 96 percent of nurses are women and they share with all women certain developmental and societal difficulties. This book will discuss developmental and discrimination issues for women in general and will link them to the problems of nurses. In addition it will explore sexism within nursing, its guises and its effects. Finally it will suggest ways of combating sexism, of improving self esteem and interpersonal relationships of nurses and of increasing job satisfaction and longevity.
